02 The work

Four things go wrong on a Sub-Zero more than anything else.

Each one has a short list of usual causes. Knowing which list you are on before a technician arrives is most of the diagnosis.

  1. Base grille off a stainless built-in refrigerator, compressor exposed, multimeter held to the wiring

    Refrigerator Repair

03 What it costs

What you are charged for, and what moves the number.

One figure is fixed and published: the service call is $89, and it is credited in full against an approved repair. Beyond that we do not print a rate card we could not stand behind, because the part your model takes and how far the unit has to come apart decide most of the figure. What we will do is show you the whole register: what each job involves, what pushes it up or down, and a firm parts-and-labour number in writing on site — agreed before anything is opened, and it does not move after that without your say-so.

Job register — Sub-Zero built-in refrigeration, Bothell WA. What each repair involves and what decides the final number on your invoice.
Repair Price, or what sets it On site Typical scope
Service call $89 45–75 min One flat charge for the visit and the full written assessment, credited in full against the repair if you approve the work the same day.
Evaporator or condenser fan motor Motor cost by model 1–2 hrs Most common cause of a warm fresh-food section on a dual-compressor unit. One part, one visit — the motor your model takes decides most of the figure.
Defrost heater / thermistor / bimetal Which part failed 1–2 hrs Covers the frost-sheet and warm-drawer faults on freezer columns. A thermistor is a fraction of a full heater assembly; the service call settles which one you actually need.
Door gasket replacement Per door, gasket by model 1 hr Priced per door. Includes reseating the magnetic seal and re-checking door alignment. Door size and generation set the gasket cost.
Ice maker module or inlet valve Valve or whole module 1–2 hrs Fill-tube clearing and water-line diagnosis is part of the same visit. A water inlet valve is a fraction of a module replacement, and which one you need is established before you are quoted.
Wine cooler thermostat / control board Board generation 1–2 hrs A thermostat is far cheaper than a board, and board cost swings hard by model generation. Confirmed with you before anything is ordered.
Sealed system — leak, drier, recharge Access and refrigerant type 3–5 hrs EPA 608 work, and the one job here that sits well above the rest — opening the sealed system is a different order of work. Quoted per model once the leak is located, never estimated blind.
  • You approve the figure first. Nothing is dismantled until you have the parts-and-labour number in writing and have said yes to it.
  • The service call comes off the bill. Approve the repair on the same visit and the flat $89 is credited in full.
  • Parts are OEM and itemised. Part numbers are printed on your invoice, not hidden in a lump sum.
  • No weekend surcharge. The crew works 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days, and weekend visits are billed at the same rate as any other day.
  • No charge for the guess. If a part turns out not to be the fault, you do not pay for it — the service call exists so nothing is fitted on a hunch.
  • We will tell you to stop. If the repair is not worth it against the value of the unit, you get that in writing too.

04 How a call runs

Three stages, and you sign off on the middle one.

  1. Multimeter, screwdrivers and bagged replacement parts laid out on a towel in front of an opened unit

You describe it, we narrow it

Model number off the plate behind the grille, plus what the unit is actually doing. Two minutes on the phone usually cuts the likely causes down to three, and tells us what to load on the van.

The line is answered 24/7; same-day slots for calls placed before 11am.

  2. Multimeter probe on the control board bay behind an undercounter unit's lower grille

    On-site diagnostic, written down

Cabinet and evaporator temperatures logged, defrost circuit forced and timed, condenser and fans checked, sealed system read under gauges when the readings call for it. You get the measurements, not an opinion.

A flat $89 service call, credited in full against an approved repair.

  3. Empty refrigerator cabinet interior, closed up and clean, showing the rear air vent and shelf clips

    Priced, approved, verified

A firm parts-and-labour number before anything is opened. After the repair the unit is run back down to spec and you see the final readings before we pack up.

90 days on parts and labour.

05 Standing

What we hold, and what each one actually means.

Anyone can print “certified” on a van. Here is the specific list, with the plain-English version of why it matters to your unit.

  • EPA Section 608 certified

Required to open a sealed system legally. Refrigerant is recovered and weighed in, not vented and topped up.

  • Washington L&I registered and bonded

Registration and bond details are provided in writing before any work starts. Liability cover is current.

  • Sub-Zero built-in specialists

Built-in 500/600/700 series, integrated IT columns, undercounter drawers and wine storage. Not a general appliance route.

  • Panel-ready handled properly

Integrated units come out of cabinetry and go back on their original shims and screws. Cabinet faces are protected before anything moves.

  • OEM parts, dated invoice

Factory parts with the part number printed on the invoice, so the next technician — us or anyone else — knows exactly what is in the machine.

  • 90-day parts and labour warranty

On the specific repair carried out. If the same fault returns inside 90 days the return visit is not billed.

Sub-Zero Repair Bothell is an independent repair business. We are not a Sub-Zero factory service centre and we do not carry out warranty work on behalf of Sub-Zero Group, Inc. If your unit is inside its factory warranty, call the manufacturer first — we will tell you so on the phone rather than take the visit.

06 On the record

What the register says, visit by visit.

Entries from Bothell kitchens, filed as they came in: the symptom first, then what it turned out to be.

5.0/ 51,109reviews on file

  • Our unit is older than my youngest child and I expected to be told it was beyond help. Instead he read it, found the defrost circuit had failed rather than anything structural, and had it holding by evening.

    Nooshin F.Maywood HillsOct 2025

  • We bought the house with this unit already in the wall and no paperwork for it. He read the generation off the plate, found a control board fault, and sourced the right part for that serial. Both zones within a degree.

    Paulette Z.Maywood HillsJan 2026

  • Ice tasted of everything else in the freezer and the cubes were sticking into one lump. A slow drip down the fill tube plus a tired filter, both dealt with in one visit. I did wait most of the afternoon.

09 Questions

The eight we get asked every week.

How soon can someone get to Bothell?

The line is answered 24/7 and the crew works 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days, so a call booked before 11am is usually seen the same day. Canyon Park, Bothell Landing, North Creek and Maywood Hills all sit inside the daily route, so those addresses get the earliest windows. Anything called in after mid-afternoon is normally next morning.

The fridge side is warm but the freezer is fine — is that a big repair?

Usually not. A Sub-Zero built-in runs two separate cooling circuits, so one side failing while the other holds points at that side alone: the fresh-food evaporator fan, a defrost fault on that circuit, or a blocked air path. It is a diagnosable, repairable failure and rarely means replacing the cabinet.

Is the service call fee charged on top of the repair?

No. The $89 service call is one flat fee covering the visit and the full assessment, and it comes straight off the repair total if you approve the work on the same visit. You are told the repair price before anything is opened up.

Do you carry parts on the van?

The common failure items, yes — evaporator and condenser fan motors, defrost heaters, thermistors, bimetals, door gaskets, water inlet valves and control boards for the widespread model families. Sealed-system components and older-generation boards are ordered against your specific model and serial.

Can you work on an integrated unit without wrecking the cabinetry?

That is the normal job here. Panel-ready and integrated columns are pulled on protection, worked on, and reset on the original shims and screw positions so the door lines up with the run of cabinets exactly as it did before.

How old is too old to repair?

Sub-Zero built-ins are designed for 20+ years and parts stay available a long time. The honest cut-off is economic, not mechanical: if a 22-year-old unit needs a compressor and a control board at once, we will say so and tell you what a replacement costs instead of selling you the repair.

Do you charge extra for evenings or weekends?

No. The crew works 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, seven days, weekends included, all at the standard rate. There is no weekend surcharge and no after-hours premium inside published hours.

What should I do while I wait for the appointment?

Vacuum the condenser grille if you can reach it, keep the doors shut, and move anything that will spoil into a cooler. Do not defrost the unit with a heat gun or hair dryer — melted water in the wrong place turns a straightforward defrost repair into a control board replacement, which costs several times as much.

Not covered here? Call (206) 210-3547 and ask — answering it on the phone is free, and sometimes that is the end of the matter.

10 Book it

Tell us the model and what it is doing.

Two minutes on the phone gets the likely cause down to a short list and the right parts onto the van, or pick a slot yourself on the booking page. Calls placed before 11am are usually seen the same day across Bothell.
